The food was good. The cafe was very cold. Price is OK as long as you make the most of the kids activities.
Absolutely amazing place full of information that helps you understand the amazing journeys captain James Cook encountered
Drove here out of our way from Inverness to London especially to see this museum as we are visiting from Australia, said it was open but turned up and found a printed sign on the door saying it is closed for winter, tried calling the phone number but no answer...to say we were disappointed and annoyed is a understatement!! I wish these places would update their opening hours.
I made my first long overdue visit to this excellent museum yesterday. It was a glorious sunny day & the harbour front was quite busy but rather surprisingly the museum itself was not. The location & the fact that Cook stayed in this house for several years whilst learning his seamanship makes it very special. The only other building surviving in the North-East that can make this claim is the School House museum in Great Ayton but it has a very limited collection compared to the Grape Lane house.Well laid out &, as with all good museums, more information than can sensibly be digested in one visit. I will return.
Small museum but highly recommended. Well set out, lots of good information and really captures the spirit of the old harbour and Cooks importance to the history of Whitby. If you enjoy nautical history or sociological history of the time then don't miss this lovely little museum.
