Great kippers,always call in when in Whitby
Best kippers you can get anywhere, full stop. Good to look in the little smokehouse and see how it's done, the smell is amazing and they taste better than any kippers you can buy anywhere else. Best to get in early as I've been before and they've sold out (or only have the really big ones or tiny ones left) by early afternoon.
If you like your kippers, this is the place to get the best kippers around. Don't forget to ask if you can have a look in the smokehouse.
Having purchased kippers from here many times, without being in any way disappointed, I regret having to say a purchase yesterday was an exception to this ...I asked my daughter (who was on a day out with a friend in Whitby) to get us a couple of kippers. She found the customer service to be very lacking, describing the person serving as being miserable. To make matters worse, he (initially) short changed her ... Shed given him a 10 note, he gave her change for 5 ... When she pointed this out, he simply said, Oh, yes, you did didnt you, no apology! She also pointed out that even if it had been a 5 note, the change was still short ... Still no apology!As for the kippers themselves, if they were meant to be fresh I wouldnt like to have had not fresh ones ... The flesh was hard to the point of being chewy in texture! Could not enjoy and ended up putting in bin!As said at start of this review, this is first time been disappointed ... and will probably go there again but will mention (in person) this disappointment.
OMG - I am told that is modern speak for exceptionally good which a kipper from Fortunes is.... really is. If you like kippers you wont find better. Somewhat eclectic opening hours but worth it.
